M/V Viking: The Voyage | Home

Day One - The Adventure Begins

Securing the BuoyFrost Island

The mooring weight is a 6000 pound block of concrete, deposited courtesy of a 165 foot supply/tug-boat last January (1996). A blue and white bouy with the name "Frost Island" identifies it. Our hosts are Rich and Gina Selenis, whose yurt can be seen overlooking Spencer Spit.

At this meeting, they have guests - Mike Dougherty has just returned from a sea-kayacking trip that lasted 3 months and took him from Skagway, Alaska to the San Juan Islands - a trip of over 1100 miles. His brother and sister-law Bill and DeVonne have come up from Belleview, WA for the weekend to greet him at his "homecoming" - the arrival of the Viking is an unexpected surprise for him, and provides the setting for an evening topside dinner celebration.

We listened to stories of moose and unsuspecting seals being taken-down by bears, miles of rocky coast that wouldn't allow even the beaching of a kayack, and the worst spring weather Alaska has seen in recent years. Travellers' Tales hopes to get Mr. Dougherty's permission to feature the complete story of his adventures at a later date.
