M/V Viking: The Voyage | Home
No sooner had we recovered from the threat posed by the speed-hungry ferry, another challenge loomed like mist on the horizon... It was mist on the horizon.
Although certainly a classic vessel, the Viking is not without its own array of state-of-the-art electonic equipment (at least by 1937 standards). On went the radar, the radio, and the GPSS (Global Positioning Satellite System).
We we quickly enveloped, but the GPSS allowed us to track our longitude and lattitude, while the radar screen gave us visuals of nearby vessels and land-masses, and the radio allowed us to listen-in on conversations between the Coast Guard and shipping traffic*.
*A vessel greater that 75 feet must keep in radio contact with the Coast Guard.
