Day Six - Encounter with the Bering Star

We were all treated to a tour of both the barge and the tug - sturdy vessels built to survive the often punishing contitions of the North Pacific. The barge was described by the Chief Engineer as a "floating refrigerator". It serves as fish-processing factory, cold storage, garage, and home to the crew. Even empty of cargo, its twin diesel generators consume hundreds of gallons of fuel a day cooling the hold.

Having completed the full tour, Matt chose to immortalize the occasion by having his picture taken under the sign meant to discourage the riff-raff.

But alas, life at sea means many goodbyes, and so we were off once again to ply the waters of the San Juan Islands, in search of a calm anchorage and perhaps some good fishing...
